2016 Mayo Litter Action League April Results

Love where you live logoThe 2016 Mayo Litter Action League April Results are in. The Swinford judging took place sometime from Thursday the 23rd of April, when the competition begun, to Friday the 1st of May. This is Swinford’s first year in the Mayo Litter Action league competition and the format has changed slightly from previous years.

Each town and village in the competition is awarded €1,000 to begin with. Each item of litter seen on the day of judging costs €1, which is then deducted from your starting fund. The more items of litter found, the higher the cost, and the more we loose!

On the Kiltimagh Road 10 pieces of litter were noted including cigarette boxes, takeaway packaging, tin foil, lotto tickets, sweet papers etc.

On Bridge Street 14 pieces of litter were noted.

Market Street was clean with the exception of 1 Dog Foul.

On Main Street from the Bridge to the Hotel 20 pieces of litter were noted and from the Hotel to the top of the street 30 pieces of litter were noted. The litter was varied and included drink bottles, cans, sweet wrappers, serviettes, cigarette butts and boxes etc.

8 pieces of litter were noted on Station Road.

The Kilkelly road was litter free.

“As part of our preparation of the Litter Management Plan 2016 – 2019 the

main causes of litter in Mayo was found to be cigarette butts (31%), packaging

items i.e. bottles, bags, coffee cups (30%) and sweet related litter (25%).

Please note that particular attention will be given to these types of litter in

this year’s competition in an effort to try to reduce these statistics in the
