Swinford has entered the 2016 Mayo Litter League which has begun. The judging of the 2016 Mayo Litter League commenced on Thursday the 21st of April. The competition runs from April through to September. This will be Swinford’s first year in the competition. The competition is similarly based on the National Tidy Towns competition. Swinford is in group A this year.

Love where you live logoWe are asking everyone to help us out in the Mayo Litter League competition. We will continue our regular litter picks on Wednesday evenings at 7 and Saturday mornings at 11. We would ask everyone to keep the footpaths outside their premises litter and weed free. The judges can call around at any time!

Group A

  • Newport Mayo Litter League
  • Crosmolina
  • Swinford
  • Foxford
  • Ballinrobe
  • Belmullett
  • Charlestown
  • Ballyhaunis
  • Castlebar

This competition is open to Tidy Towns Committees and Community Groups in all towns and villages in County Mayo. It is run on a league basis i.e. each of the participating towns and villages compete against all other towns and villages in its group on successive months.

The control and prevention of litter pollution in Co. Mayo is an ongoing challenge. One of the measures in the County’s Litter Management Plan is Community and Voluntary Group co-operation. We hope over the lifespan of this plan to increase promotion of and expand these awards.

Entrants are divided into the following categories:

Group A                      Large towns (population over 1,000)

Group B                      Smaller towns (population 500 – 1000)

Group C                      Large Villages (populations <500)

Group D                      Smaller Villages
