Mayo Swift Week Monday 29th June to Saturday 4th July

Mayo Swift Week begins today and continues until next Saturday the 4th of July. There are numerous events taking place during Mayo Swift week in various towns around Mayo. Mayo Swift week offers an opportunity to learn about Swifts behaviour and a chance to observe first hand local breeding colonies. The first event this week takes place at St James Church in Charlestown at 8.30 where there will be a Swift watch.

On Tuesday the new website Swift Conservation Mayo will be launched. This new website will be the focal point for the people of Mayo to provide and find out information on the conservation of Swifts in Mayo. Here all the records will be kept of the number of Swifts and nesting sites in every town in Mayo. There are currently 10 nests in Swinford with 21 birds flying. On Thursday the 2nd July at 8pm, there will be the official “Switching on”  of the Swift attraction calls at the town hall in Claremorris by Cllr John Cribbin. This will be followed by a Swift walk in the town.

On Friday there will be a Swift talk followed by a Swift watch at the nest box’s at GMIT campus in Castlebar. The talk will begin at 8pm. On Saturday there will be a talk on Swifts at Westport town hall at 3pm. This will be followed by a Swift walk around Westport town.
