Bridge Wall Flowerbed

Bridge wall flowerbed project 2024

Bridge Wall Flowerbed

Swinford Tidy Towns, in conjunction with Mayo county council, initiated a biodiversity plan to be drawn up for Swinford in 2018. Karina from Giorria Environmental Services drew up a very detailed plan for the town. In the biodiversity plan for Swinford, establishing a flowerbed at the bridge wall on lower main street was identified.

From the biodiversity report;

Bridge wall flowerbedThis area consists of a low stone wall fronted with a grass verge. There are also some trees and these are surrounded by daffodils. The grass is mown regularly. Planting native foxgloves along the wall will add extra summer colour to this area. Management Recommendations
1. Plant row of foxgloves adjacent to the stonewall. Foxglove seed can be collected in the autumn from a local source. Seeds can be scattered in seed trays and once germinated plants can be transplanted into large pots. Once big enough these can be planted out in the spring. These are called plug plants.
2. In the autumn, flowering stems can be cut back, but make sure to scatter seeds in area before composting stems.
3. Foxgloves are biennial, and may need to be replanted every couple of years.

Some of the varieties of flowers set in this bed include, Allium, Aster, Foxglove, Sedum, Geranium, Rudbeckia and Verbana. These are just some of the many flowers planted in this area which are excellent for our endangered pollinators.
