Swinford Spirit of Place Urban Design Study.

Welcome to Swinford

Welcome to Swinford

Mayo County Council have recently held a discussion forum about “Swinford Re-focused, spirit of place urban design study”. This was in preparation for the upcoming visit to Swinford of Travis Price and Architecture students from the Catholic University of Washington for Spirit of Place Swinford 2015. The students will be in Swinford from the 25th to the 31st of January next. Numerous clubs and organisations from the Swinford area attended this community meeting, which took place in the Cultural Centre last Wednesday the 21st of January between 5.30 & 7.30.

The students are undertaking an occupancy and urban design study of the town which will incorporate Swinford’s history, heritage and culture as well as the future plan for the town. The Students are preparing for this year’s Spirit-of-Place project for 2015 which will be built in Swinford in June/July of this year. The project presents an opportunity to continue the great progress in the town by numerous clubs and organisations in recent years. The three key topics that were discussed on the evening included the following;

  • What positive ‘actions’ were undertaken in Swinford in 2013 & 2014?
  • What future ‘opportunities’ could be prioritised for Swinford in 2015 & 2016?
  • What Town Image, Vision and Amenities could be promoted in terms of future social, economic and tourist investment and development in Swinford?

Travis and his students arrived in Swinford on Sunday evening last. On Monday morning the group were given a tour of all the historical sites in Swinford by local historians Michael Comer and Michéal Murphy. Some members from Swinford Tidy Towns committee also accompanied the group on the tour, along with Cllr Michael Smyth, some students from Scoil Muire & Padraig and Danny O’Toole (Mayo Co Co project manager). As well as a tour of the town, the group were also brought to the old Protestant Graveyard, the handball alley, the Church, the old fever hospital, the Famine Plot and the Paupers Graveyard.

The students will be based in Swinford for the rest of this week, and will be returning to Washington on Sunday next. They will continue the project planning and preparation back in the Catholic University of Washington. They will then return later in the summer months to complete and build their project. Swinford Tidy Towns will be working closely with Travis and the students on the project and we will have regular updates on their progress here on the site.

Visit Travis Price website to view previous projects undertaken by them in various locations around the world including Belmullet, Ballycastle and Inisturk Island in County Mayo.
